African-Americans have a 63% higher risk for developing diabetic end-stage renal disease than do whites.

¥

The incidence of diabetic end-stage renal disease is 4 to 6 times higher in Mexican-Americans that in whites.

¥

The incidence of blindness secondary to diabetes in nonwhite individuals is double that for white persons.

¥

Diabetes-related amputations are performed more often in African-Americans (9.0 per 1,000) than in whites (6.3 per 1,000).

Low Foot Risk Patient
All of the following:
 
¥ Intact protective sensation (Good Feeling)
¥ Pedal pulses present (Good Circulation)
¥ No severe deformity (No Bunion, Hammertoes)
¥ No prior foot ulcer
¥ No amputation

High Foot Risk Patient
One or more of the following:

¥ Loss of protective sensation (No Feeling in your Feet)
¥ Absent pedal pulses (Poor Circulation)
¥ Severe foot deformity (Bunions, Hammertoes)
¥ History of foot ulcer
¥ Prior amputation
