How Does it Work?
LLLT is a leading edge pain relief therapy that uses low-level lasers to improve cellular function. It is a non-invasive, safe, and effective treatment modality where laser light is used to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and promote healing and soft tissue repair. The light wavelength emitted from a low level laser repairs tissues that have impaired cellular metabolism by stimulating blood circulation and restoring nutrition to encourage the regeneration of healthy tissues.
The laser system delivers light energy from infrared laser radiation, called photons. These photons are absorbed by damaged cells causing stimulation of the mitochondria to accelerate production of ATP. This biochemical increase in cellular energy transforms cells from a state of illness or injury to a stable, healthy state.

How Long Does LLLT Take, And How Many Times Do I Need It?
Laser Therapy has been widely used in Europe for over 30 years. There are over 2,000 peer-reviewed articles on laser therapy for a variety of conditions and ailments. Laser therapy is recognized as an effective treatment of pain and inflammation. Acute injuries respond quickly to treatment, in some cases improvement is noted after a couple minutes. Chronic conditions typically take longer to respond, but often laser therapy will be effective even in those cases where other treatment methods failed. In most cases, 6 to 12 sessions are required to achieve significant pain relief. Still, there are many examples of laser therapy achieving great success and pain reduction with less than five treatments.
Northern Edge Physical Therapy will conduct a detailed screen of your pain-related condition to develop a Laser Therapy plan that meets your goals. The frequency and duration of treatment depends on the severity of your symptoms. Ultimately, you will elect the number of sessions.
How effective is LLLT?
Over 200 randomized clinical trials have been published on LLLT, most of which are on pain. Many studies on LLLT suggest it is effective in relieving short-term pain for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, acute and chronic pain, tendinopathy, and joint disorders.
“[This study] shows that LLLT reduces pain immediately after treatment in acute neck pain and up to 22 weeks after completion of treatment in patients with chronic neck pain.” The Lancet 2009
